Zinc will play an important role in the sustainable transition to achieve the goal of the net zero CO2 emissions by 2050 set by the EU. Thanks to the unique properties of zinc, it can be used in a wide range of areas such as infrastructure, consumer goods, batteries, and industrial products – all of which play an important role in the transition to renewable energy, energy efficiency and circular economy.

Get to know our low carbon-zinc products

As the first company in the world, Boliden now offer two separate zinc products, produced with drastically lower carbon footprint than the global average. One product, Low-carbon Zinc, is produced from concentrate from Boliden’s own zinc mines. The other product, Recycled Zinc, is produced from 100% recycled metals

We mine around 270 ktonnes of zinc in concentrates from our mines in Tara, Garpenberg and the Boliden area every year. The majority of this goes to our zinc smelting plants in Kokkola and Odda, where we produce around 500 ktonnes of zinc every year. They also handle recycled zinc.

A large part of our zinc is sold to European sheet metal producers. Most end-users are in the construction and automotive industries. Our zinc meets the industry’s highest quality standards, which means it can also be used for making batteries. Today, we are the world’s sixth largest zinc producer. To meet demand, we focus on developing alloys that reinforce the end product’s qualities.

More than 90% of the world’s zinc production is from zinc blende ores that also include other valuable metals such as lead, copper and precious metals.

The zinc content is usually around a few percent but may in some cases be as much as 20 percent.
